It all started in 2018
I was in my last year of university, studying anthropology, and had no idea what I’d be doing once I threw my cap in the air to receive that £50K+ worth of paper telling me I had successfully completed my education.
I knew I wanted to work in the creative industry but how I’d make that happen was a mystery. What could I do? Who would I do it for? I was stumped. So I took to my career advisor, Bridget, and told her my dream “I want to be a documentary filmmaker”. Her response: “Amazing, let’s make that happen.” Spoiler alert: I am not a documentary filmmaker.
Together we fixed my CV
and prepared me for the annual ‘Creative Careers Open Day’. Buzzing with excitement, I attended the open day and it was here that I was introduced to Karma, a production company that would jump-start my career in the creative industry. I was in awe as I watched their showreel and listened as their director told us about the amazing work they did. I was sold…
“I NEED to work here”, I thought to myself, and after some emailing back and forth with Karma’s production coordinator, Monique, I was given the chance to interview and got the job! I worked my a** off and ended that internship with a full-time job and, before I knew it, I was a junior producer/editor being paid to create videos.
I loved every minute of it
and learned so much that I outgrew my environment and eventually moved on to work for Stylist Magazine as a senior producer/editor.
It was during my time there that I started to hone my skills as a video editor and thanks to the guidance and support of my boss, Scott, I leaped into the big bad world of freelancing.
It was the best decision I ever made.
At the end of 2022, more than 4 years after that creative careers open day, I started my freelance video editing business and since then I’ve worked for some of the biggest names in the game: Tinder, Urban Decay, Boots, Nike…
It has been unbeliveably fulfilling
but unsurprisingly, it hasn’t been without its fair share of stress, confusion, and at times, loneliness. I knew nobody else who freelanced and I had to learn most of the job on the fly. How do I find clients? What happens if I’m not paid on time? What even is an NDA?
Well, I figured it out with the help of Google and a few more amazing people (shoutout Nicole!) and here we are today.
Reading this you may be under the impression
that a lot of my success was pure luck, but as the former senior video editor at Karma, Joe, used to say: “Luck is the combination of hard work and opportunity”, and my god did I work hard. But honestly? If it weren’t for all of the incredible people I mentioned so far (my “opportunities”) I wouldn’t be where I am today.
So, I decided to pay it forward and now, I coach other creatives who want to take ownership of their careers and go from full-time to freelance, so that one day they too can look back in awe at all they’ve accomplished and shout me out on their websites (I’m joking… kinda 🤭).
So no, I didn’t become a documentary filmmaker… Instead, I became a kickass video editor and freelance coach. Suffice it to say, I’m happy with how everything turned out ⚡
